Design a future that holds meaning beyond bottom lines, and you are likely to bring out the best in your people and organization. After all, nobody ever found their personal best, nor inspired their brightest people, without something above and beyond the numbers. It’s up to you to find and communicate the compelling “why” people should get behind your vision, goals, or targets. Only then will your aims hold the power to fire up those you lead, and those you serve, in a sustainable way.
Here’s a start:
- What is it that holds meaning—beyond the numbers—about the future your current efforts are likely to create?
- Gut check: are you feeling excited and highly engaged in the vision you’ve set for yourself / your organization?
- If not, it’s time to take a hard look at the why of where you’re headed, and maybe even go back to the drawing board and design something different.
- Set today as “Point A” and one year hence as “Point B.” What must be true of “Point B” for it to make a positive difference in the world, to your people, and/or to those you serve?
