Over time, a leader develops into their role, and the role adapts to the leader. Evolution, then, plays a larger part of shaping one’s job than any of our best-laid plans. This practically guarantees a discrepancy between your desired role, and how you spend the majority of your time today. Make it a practice to look at the gaps between the two, and map out changes you can begin today that make sense for your future. You will be on your way to your personal best—serving yourself, your organization, and those who care about you too.
Self-coaching Practice:
- Write yourself a new job description: what role would have you doing your best and being at your best most days, all things considered?
- Compare that to the activities and tasks that make up the majority of your time today.
- Develop an action plan based on the gaps between the two results, above, share it with a trusted advisor, and enlist them to help keep you accountable to working through your plan.
