How many times have you asked yourself, "Does that person even know how they come across to others?" In fact, it’s not uncommon for brilliant, capable people to lack such awareness. Yet it’s an avoidable blind spot, one that can overshadow even the greatest talent. Gaining a clear understanding of your effect on others is a worthwhile practice. In one-on-one conversations and meetings, make it a habit to allocate a portion of your attention to self-observation. It also never hurts to ask others for feedback about how you come across. This type of self-awareness will help make you a more engaging leader.
Self-coaching Questions:
- What impact would I most like to have on those around me?
- What self-observation and feedback would help me gain a clearer understanding of the actual ways I am coming across to others?
- Given that, what changes can I commit to making?
