Realism in the face of difficulties is a leadership asset. Yet most of us fall into denial at times, which can offer short term "relief," even while prolonging our problems. With a deliberate effort, you can clean up any avoidance of your own, and help others do the same. Take a look at any lingering difficulties, and you are likely to find some measure of denial at work. Make yourself face the situation head on, and you are likely to see new possibilities. Such realism -- along with the courage to set a new course -- allow you to overcome even the most significant challenges.
Self-coaching Questions:
- What difficult situation or problem am I avoiding?
- Over the long haul, is it more costly in terms of resources and energy to continue avoiding it, or to face it head on and make whatever decisions are necessary?
- What would it be like to have this situation or problem resolved?
