I adapted these questions from what’s known in 12-step circles as a “Group Inventory.” If you’re looking for something new and different to do at your next leadership team meeting, here’s something you might try. These are all good things for any group to consider, and to act upon, in order to capitalize on its strengths:
- What is the basic purpose of our organization?
- What more can the leadership team do to carry out that purpose?
- Are we attracting great talent from different backgrounds? Are we seeing a good cross-section of our community, including those with special needs?
- Do our best people stick with us, or does the turnover seem excessive? If so, why? What can we as a group do to retain our best people?
- Do we emphasize the importance of mentorship and coaching our people? How effectively? How can we do it better?
- Are we careful to respect individuality?
- Does our organization emphasize to all involved the value of operating effectively in matters large and small, in order to serve our common purpose?
- Do we encourage feedback, insights, and suggestions from everyone, giving all the opportunity to speak and participate in other group activities?
- Mindful that leadership is a great responsibility not to be viewed as the outcome of a popularity contest, are we choosing our leaders with great care?
- How well are we at managing finances, supporting our own operations, growth, reinvestment, and fiscal responsibilities?
- Are we doing all we can to provide a congenial, accessible, attractive, fun and comfortable workplace?
- Does our organization do its fair share toward fostering community—particularly as it relates to being of service to others?
Enjoy!
